Why is Braunschweig, jointly with the Region, putting itself up as a candidate for the European Culture Capital 2010?
No longer does the future of Europe depend on a city alone, it depends rather on the entirety of a region in which such city is embedded. The objective of this application is to render evidence of the potential of the City of Braunschweig and its Region for its future as a European Region. The application is a chance to strengthen regional identity, solidarity and cooperativeness. We will address the future by joining forces in outstanding and visionary projects.

If Braunschweig wants to be awarded the status of "European Culture Capital 2010" and then remain at the focus of European attention for the duration of one year it will be essential to demonstrate its qualities as early as the preliminary round.

A preparatory committee, integrating numerous personalities of the Region active in the field of culture, architecture, urban development, economy and politics, has been working on the substance of the application since June: Professor Walter Ackers, Institute of Urban and Landscape Development, Professor Gerhard Auer, architect, Dr. h. c. Gerd Biegel, Managing Director of the Braunschweigische Landesmuseum, Hans Peter Conrady, Secretary of the Braunschweigische Landschaft, Wolfgang Gropper, Director of the Braunschweig State Theatre, Jörg Gade, Director of the State Theatre's Theaterspielplatz, Professor Dr. Jochen Luckhardt, Managing Director of the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, Professor Dr. Reinhard Roseneck, Secretary of the Rammelsberg Foundation, Professor Dr. Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer, Director of the Herzog August Library, Professor Dr. Michael Schwarz, President of the Braunschweig School of Art, Dr. Dirko Thomsen of Volkswagen Coaching, Professor Dr. Karin Wilhelm, Institute of Architectural and Urban Development History, Hans Christian Wille of KMP GmbH, Director of the Braunschweig Classix Festival, and representatives of the municipal Departments of Urban Planning & Environmental Protection and Culture.

The so-called "Monday Round", a spin-off of the preparatory committee, has been meeting regularly since mid-2002 to feed in ideas and conceptual considerations. The entire Application Procedure is being centrally handled by the Department of Culture of the City of Braunschweig. On March 2003, a special staff unit was set to work, its task being to coordinate the results generated by the different teams: the Region Team, integrated by the heads of the culture departments of the counties and communities of the Region, the "Monday Round", and the internal team composed of the administrative Departments of Culture and Urban Construction.

In addition to these bodies, however, it will be the residents of the Braunschweig Region who will be given the chance to co-develop the goals of the project and to contribute their personal commitment for the city they live in.
