How can you outline the topography of the Region? The Region, comprising eight cities and districts, spans everything from classical tradition to innovative present. It has outstanding historical monuments and art treasures, from the Middle Ages to the age of state-of-the-art technology, its multiformity evidencing one of the oldest and richest scenes of European culture and civilization harbouring world cultural heritage within its boundaries. The Region combines innovative potential with incomparable coverage of world-class science which, according to a study published by the European Statistical Office, is unparalleled. The Region's numerous internationally known science and research institutions have had and have a decisive influence on the development of Europe. Over the centuries - from the decisive periods of the Middle Ages to modern times to the period when it became a civic city - the historical centre of Braunschweig (1031), the "Old City", has been a global trading centre. More or less at the same time, the Imperial City of Goslar (922), the university town of Helmstedt (952), the town of Gifhorn (1196/97), the town of Wolfenbüttel (1118), and the town of Peine (1223) developed. On the other hand, there are the "recent" foundations of the City of Wolfsburg (1938), the birth place of the Volkswagen car, and the steel city of Salzgitter (1942). |
