TRAVEL OFFERS
In medieval times and later, the Oker River, which flows around the city of Braunschweig, formed an important part of the city’s defences. In the nineteenth century, villas were built here and parks laid out. A ring of water and green vegetation, an oasis of stillness and of nature, grew up around the inner city and has been preserved to this day – a truly poetic landscape within the city that is probably unique. A river trip on the Oker has become so popular with visitors that it is now an essential part of any visit to the 'Lion City' and offers an experience you will not forget.
In the summer of 2010, the Oker and its parks become the enchanting background for Braunschweig’s Light Trail. In the quiet of the twilight and the darkness the wooden raft drifts from one position to the next and allows visitors to experience the environment of the city in a completely new way. The Oker – along which the art works are strung out like pearls – is an all-pervading presence that seems to expand to fill the surrounding space with its illuminations. A novel, unusual way to experience the trail, and one that perfectly matches the topography of the city, is to view it from a boat or wooden raft.
