The Kitchen of Ideas
Making Science Tempting
Research means experimenting - cooking does too. New recipes are created and tried, ingredients are varied, spices added in various different ways. Curiosity and creativity, courage and the joy of experimenting, are what link cooking and science.
"Kitchen of Ideas"
That's why the "Stadt der Wissenschaft 2007" ("City of Science 2007") chose "Kitchen of Ideas" as its slogan. The main aim of the cooks is to highlight the identification of the region with research, to link science and business even more closely and to make the region more attractive for young scientists. A wealth of ideas and recipes are to be found in Braunschweig's Year of Science 2007 programme, all of them connecting science, business, culture, and the people in the region with each other. With Starters, a Main Course and Dessert on the science menu, the "Kitchen of Ideas Braunschweig" provides tempting access to research and development throughout the year.
Scientific Innovations from Braunschweig
"Europe's hottest R&D region is. Braunschweig!", according to a study by Deutsche Bank Research. With 4% of its working population employed in this field, the region has the highest "density of scientists" in the whole of Europe and even has a leading place worldwide, with its R&D intensity coming to 7.1% of GDP. With its large number of internationally acclaimed research establishments, the region has a science-supported innovation potential that is constantly being expanded. The Research Region Braunschweig is characterised by particularly effective networking and a wide field of competence.
The special feature of the Research Region is the well-matched combination of science, business, culture and society in general - this mixture stands for the quality of Braunschweig's Kitchen of Ideas. The respective centres of competence make Braunschweig's research landscape a leading region for the future through targeted links between science and business. A large number of developments from the region are based on the close cooperation between science and business. Siemens AG has developed the CargoMover, a kind of truck running on rails, jointly with the Center of Transportation at the TU Braunschweig. Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH is working closely with the TU Clausthal to develop Hightech Steel. Volkswagen AG constantly has exchanges with regional research institutes, including the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Braunschweig University of Art), in the field of "Transportation Design".
