Settlements
Jan Köchermann
If one could free matter from the thrall of gravity, then futuristic cityscapes in the sky become thinkable. Uniformly illuminated objects, lit as though with a never-setting sun, shedding their soft light in the darkness on the surface below. Giant Chinese lanterns, turning in the wind, making almost romantic bows to passersby.
The light sculptures consist of metal armatures covered with sturdy plastic sheeting imprinted with the images of blocks of flats. Neon lights of different sizes are arranged inside the light sculptures. The facades of the light sculptures are inspired by local low-income housing projects and settlements in the suburbs of Braunschweig, and the artwork moves them into the centre of attention. In order to serve the urban character, this installation consists of different settlements at three different locations.
